July 2018-Our Kurdish family from Syria is in Creston!! After two years of waiting since our application was made to bring them here, they have arrived safe and sound in our wonderful community. Many thanks to the group of Creston Refugee Committee members who travelled to Vancouver to meet them, including a valley resident who was able to speak to them in their own language!! Also, many thanks to those who worked so hard to find them a house and to prepare it with most of what they will need for their lives here in our valley. Over the next while, they will be acclimatizing themselves to their new home and beginning to learn English. Creston Valley...YOU ROCK!!
October 2018 Pie Bee-Another huge success for this annual event held in the newly rennovated Trinity United Church- Apple pies and Rhubarb pies were successfully sold to many in the community and we wish to thank all those wonderful volunteers who made this event so successful.
It is with deepest sadness that we honor the passing of one of the Creston Refugee Committee's most valued and dedicated members. Iris Aryan passed on after a brave battle with cancer in February of this year and her efforts to bring refugees to Creston, most notably the Kurdish family from Syria who had been in a refugee camp in Iraq, were so appreciated. She had bravely remained with us hoping to be well enough to welcome them to our community and in true Iris style, she managed to achieve that goal. The Kurdish family was able to attend her memorial service. Rest in peace, Iris. We miss you dearly.
Our 40th anniversary celebration held at the Creston Museum on June 27, 2019 was a HUGE success with wonderful food, costumes and personal anecdotes. We are so grateful to all who helped to make this event happen. Stay tuned for pictures and bulletin board writings coming soon!

Sept. 25 &26, 2020-Creston Refugee Committee BIG Garage Sale;
This event was a HUGE SUCCESS! Thankyou beloved Creston Valley! Here is what our local newspaper wrote:
"...All items were donated from the community, and the funds will go towards financially supporting a refugee family for a year when they arrive in Creston.
A Kachin Burmese family of eight currently living as refugees in Malaysia is expected to arrive in town later this year, and the proceeds from this garage sale will go toward supporting this family. Once they arrive in Creston, the total number of refugees who have come to Creston will be exactly 100.
The committee has been sponsoring refugee families since 1978, and a total of 92 refugees have come to Creston since 2018 thanks to the group’s efforts." ( Creston Valley Advance)
Post Garage Sale from Linda Price:
First I want to send a big THANK YOU to our fund raising team who worked so hard to find a venue, advertise, collect donations, set up, clean up and work the 2 days of the sale. Dave Budney says, “It was a lot of work but it was fun!” so I hope the other members of his fund raising team, Sheila, Maggie, Allison, Joanna and Jean feel the same.
Another THANK YOU goes to everyone who volunteered and donated items to sell. Now I know you are wondering how much we made and including a couple of nice donations it is just over $8,300. I think that when Sue crunches the numbers she will say, “ we finally have enough money to support the Maplamchang family of 8 and when will they arrive?”
Thanks again, for me it was the easiest refugee fundraiser I have been involved in,
P.S. Another comment from Dave, “ we had a shopper named Liza who stopped in at 4:00, she spent $5 and then spent over an hour helping to pack up.”
Due to the Corona Virus, we have had to suspend some events and fundraisers for the time being. But your donations are very much appreciated. They can be mailed as shown below: Thankyou, stay safe and well.
Donations can be made by mail to: Trinity United Church
Please write "for Creston Refugee Committee" on memo line on your cheque.
If you wish to be sent an income tax receipt, please include your mailing address. Thankyou!
